He married Lee Wei Ling (Janice) 李慧苓 #306, married 17 May 1982 in St. Francis Assis, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, born 05 June 1960 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Growing up in Kuala Kedah by Andrew Wong

He attended St. Michael’s school and worked part time in the shop from around 8 years old, assisting during the harvest time in the paddy fields. There he would guard the bags of the paddy rice from the goats until it was carted away by the bullocks to the mill.

When around 15 years old and during the harvest time when it was the school holidays, his father would wake them up by banging on the ceiling with a pole as the bedrooms were on the first floor. On occasions, Andrew would sleep through this and his father would soon give up. After a breakfast of local coffee with cracker biscuits mixed in, he would cycle to the field and using the measuring barrel to measure and fill up the bags from the threshed rice, then sew the bags up. The weight of the full bag would be around 130 to 150 catties. In the afternoon, he would guard the bags until the older brothers with their father would collect the bagged rice. However he can remember Peter disappearing from this work and going to the Bee Bee Park shop house to hide and study.

Even when school started there would still be some paddy rice to collect and bag and this was done after school. If he couldn’t hide in time he often would have to go on guard duty in the fields. He claims that the long hours and hard work made him tired and he was known to go to sleep at school or on the bus from school so on several occasions he did not wake up until it reached the terminus at Kuala Kedah.

Later on, his father had an accident with the motor bike so the 3^rd and 4^th brothers took over more of the rice collecting while the father remained in the shop. One night after doing guard duty in the field, Andrew came back to the shop house on the bike with a fighting rooster on a box on the front. The police happened to be passing by and thought he looked rather suspicious so they followed him home. As he did not have a licence, his brothers had to bail him out.

Once the rice was collected there was less demand for his services so he joined the other children from the village in playing local games such as spinning the top. In their version the aim was to throw the spinning top at those spinning in a circle trying to knock them out. On one occasion, the top spun out and hit an old man riding a bicycle with some chickens. He broke all their tops.

The cute (at that period of course)  little girl is actually our next door neighbour's daughter by the name of Ling, (Yong Guat Ling her full name), She tagged herself as Jasmine during her teenage school days, but I have not seen her for around 25-30 yrs!! The last was when I met her in KL in Bukit Bintang Plaza, next to Sg.Wang Plaza selling furniture'..
Ya, I missed out the story of firewood cutting! Wow, that was the toughest most scared assignment!
One lorry load of old cut down rubber trees, dumped at the main road side in front of the KK old shop house, then piece by piece transported with a huge bicycle, bigger than me of course at the time, slowly struggling and wobbling through the narrow lane beside the old house and into the backyard, together with Michael and also Anthony Chew who was kind enough to cross over to lend a hand, because, he too needed the assistance when their firewood ran out.
Occasionally Peter will give a hand if he is around, but I suppose he was always lucky!
By night fall, every piece should be in the back yard, otherwise tomorrow will be another sticky day again, because of the latex! Your hands, arms armpits, cloth, chest all over, and we will have another hard time cleaning with kerosene! If we are not careful, the fresh latex from the crushed bark got to our hair and oh my, its dries up by the time we finish after a few hours!
Transportation completed, splitting the logs is next! This will take time, at no hurry pace, but tough indeed. A huge axe, I don’t know where I got the strength to lift the axe, was used to split the sawn logs to random sizes to allow them to dry up faster and later again to split them onto smaller random pieces that can fit into the fire stove, for cooking!
I remember that we would always go for the more softer  trunks which was the upper half of the tree which splits easily with one strike but the most feared was the bottom part of the trunk, the stump, which is big in diameter and very very tough, haha, this we tend to leave them to Peter, James or even Stephen's dad to finish them off!, but usually it comes back to us young turks!!
Every time when a new delivery of rubber wood trunk, it’s the season of blisters! Our palms will get swollen with blisters due to handling the huge axe and the impact from the strikes!

Other activities after school was searching for the fighting fish in the nearby Nipa palm swamps and at night he would go out hunting rats for sport. On occasions there were baby sitting duties looking after Paul’s first children.

During the wet season the house would often be flooded and he can remember sitting on the table surrounded by the water with the fish swimming past. His Grandmother, Cecilia, would be inside the house with a bamboo pole, some line and a tin of worms fishing through the window. Anne could also remember walking around on the planks across the water but more often they would ignore the planks and walk through the water …and get scolded for that! With the dry season there would be plenty of mosquitos around so coconut shell was burnt to smoke away the mosquitos. The ashes from the coconut shells was then used to clean the teeth. Salt was also added to these ashes and this was then used to preserve the eggs.

His sisters’ jobs were involved with the cooking and cleaning the house then they found occupations after leaving school, Maria into teachers training and Anne worked for Chin’s Radio. Lucy worked at the shop taking the bookings for the illegal gambling that was conducted.

Nearby was an Indian family and at night he would hang his dhotis up to dry after washing them. Once Andrew and some others “borrowed” them and hung them over the wall so that the lights from the passing cars would shine on them and they had a picture show making their shadow figures.

After completing his secondary education he worked in the Kuala Kedah shop and also the one at Bee Bee Park assisting the three brothers there as their parents were still working at their other store in Jalan Kanchut. This store was later closed down and only the Bee Bee Park one was kept. Here Andrew also assisted Goh Bee in the illegal bookie business before working at the plywood factory owned by Peter Foo in Kuala Lumpur in 1972. After about 2 years here he went to Singapore with his cousin Michael Thean and worked in a factory in Jurong but only stayed there a year before going back to the plywood factory in Kuala Lumpur. It was here that he met Janice who worked at the factory as a receptionist. As he was on a low income he had to borrow either a motor cycle or a bicycle to go courting Janice. He can still remember the long walk back to his rooms after dropping the bicycle off and being chased by the local dogs. Later he was able to rent a room in the house where Janice lived. He was married in Kuala Lumpur in 1982 and left the factory and started in watch retailing then in 1987 he took over a hair dressing business but after a couple of years he went back to watch retailing working for Hourglass in either their Lot 10 store or at KLCC.
