Age Newspaper 13/9/1933. A prominent personality in legal circles in Melbourne for about half a century Mr. David H. Herald died yesterday at Caulfield. He had been in ill health for sometime. Mr. Herald who was educated at Scotch College and Melbourne University was head partner of the firm D H Herald and sons Solicitors. About 40 years ago he was a member of the Prahan municipal council. On retiring from the council he was appointed solicitor to the municipality, a position he held until his death. He leaves a widow and 3 sons, one who is a practising solicitor at Hamilton.

He married Barbara Tui BLACK, married 1940 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Barbara: Tui Black was a comedienne with Gus Bluett who was a well known comedian in Australia for many years working mainly with J.C. Williams. Tui played opposite him. Gus went under contract to London but did not take Tui with him because of her fondness for the bottle.
She separated from Herbert because of her drinking and a couple of years after the divorce she had a daughter, father unknown, who was told that Herbert was her father and was killed in WW2.

Date: 25 Aug 1927 PATCHWORK REVUE A BRILLIANT SUCCESS
The gaiety which characterised the opening night of the Patchwork Revue which is being held at His Majesty’s Theatre, in aid of the Victorian Civil Ambulance service, was just as spontaneous and happy last night. The audience perhaps was not quite so large, but was highly appreciative, and thoroughly enjoyed the humour, the beauty, the quaintness and the droll comedy that runs throughout the performance. A special feature of the performance is the beautiful dressing, the pastel georgette billowy gowns worn by the six young ladies in Tell Me, Pretty Maiden, Are There any More at Home Like You? Vying with the delicate fairy dresses of the children in the Chopin ballet for daintiness and beauty; and the amazing costumes worn by the members of the Totem pole dance, setting off the patchwork and smart costumes worn by the ballet in the opening number. Once again warm approval greeted the efforts of the jazz band the Footwarmers, the Chopin ballet, the number from Florodora, the Totem pole dance and the final cabaret, as well as those who took part in the comedy sketches. Miss Tui Black, the winner of a competition for £100, and who is also the recipient of a twelve months’ contract with J. C. Williamson Ltd., sang Yvette very pleasingly, and was given a cordial reception.
The Lord Mayor, Sir Stephen Morell, in presenting Miss Black with the prize she had won, said that Australians had made a great name for themselves in the theatrical world. But it was necessary to find fresh talent, and for that reason the competition had been organised, and the J. C. Williamson firm had offered to give the winner a contract for a year, together with free tuition.
During the evening a turkey was auctioned, and was sold for £6. At the conclusion of the performance Mr Hansford, president of the ambulance service, again thanked all who had so generously come forward to help the service. He especially thanked Lady Tallis, who had organised the revue, which was such a delightful success, and all who were associated with her in the production of it.
This evening the performance will be repeated, and a special attraction will be a wrestling exhibition by Ted Thye and Sam Clapham.

He finished his schooling in England as his mother returned there. He returned to Australia and was a newspaper reporter in Western Australia. Later he shifted to Sydney where he was a commercial photographer and co-authored several books contributing the photography. His recent books have concentrated on the aborigines, and has produced two books by himself, the most recent in 1990 on aborigines.
His photography work has won him several prestigious awards and also a position on the Board of the Australian museum. There are three children by his first marriage and one from his second

He was the local manager of Union Steamship at Christchurch then later transferred to Wellington.
I have some newspaper articles about a farewell dinner to Robert on his transfer to Wellington. Later it appears that he established his own shipping company but it eventually got into financial difficulties. There is still a Puffett & Smith Shipping agents at the port area Napier. and a Pufflett road Havelock North Hawkes Bay.
He purchased two plots in the Southern cemetery Anglican portion Dunedin, plots 41, 42 in block 9. Address of owner Robert Puflett, Grant Street Dunedin on 14-10-1875. Size of plots 8x8. Only one plot used son Thomas buried 10 Sept 1875 age ,<1 year.
Unassisted Immigrants to Victoria show a Mr Puflett age 36 arrived Jan 1882 on ship Teanau port N F=182 page 003. Probably Robert.

Donald Allan was born in Otago in 1907 of Scottish settler stock. His father, Joseph Allan, farmed on the Taieri Plains near Dunedin. His mother was Emily Salmond, a daughter of William Salmond who came from North Shields to lecture at the recently founded Presbyterian Theological College: subsequently he became professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy at Otago University. Donald’s father died when he was seven and the family moved to Dunedin where Donald attended Otago Boys’ High School and Otago University. He was a gifted sportsman and represented Otago at both rugby and cricket. He graduated from the Otago Medical School in 1931 and spent his house surgeon and registrar years at Dunedin and Timaru hospitals during which time he gained his MD.
In 1933 Donald met and married his sister-in-law’s bridesmaid, Mary Puflett, daughter of Andrew and Isabella Puflett from Gisborne. Thereafter they set sail for England, Donald working as ship’s surgeon’ as was the usual practice in those days. Donald and Mary spent three years in London, while he gained postgraduate experience and where their daughter Jan was born. In 1937 they returned to New Zealand to an essentially general practice in Waipawa, a country town in Hawkes Bay. Donald became a true country doctor; his working day included obstetrics, anaesthetics at the nearby Waipukurau General Hospital where he was also visiting specialist physician, and home visits over many miles of unsealed roads. Over the years he developed his interests and skills in cardiology and in diabetes, which had been the topic of his MD thesis. He was much involved with the chest clinic, which was a major activity of the Waipukurau Hospital and its nearby tuberculosis sanatorium.
Above all, Donald Allan was part and parcel of his community and sport and games were as important to his involvement as was his doctoring. He was a leading member of the local tennis club and started the veterans’ tennis movement. He fished in summer and skied annually until he was 79. Bridge and golf were weekly occasions and he was a shrewd poker player. Later he became a keen bowler. Donald was an active member of Rotary and his love of gardening lead to his forming the Waipawa Beautifying Society. He was named a Hawkes Bay “Living Treasure” and his community service was recognised by the award of the Queen’s Service Medal. Like many very active and practical men, Donald was forthright in his manner sometimes appearing aggressive and demanding but he never lost the respect and affection of all those who knew him well. His wife Mary died in1995 and he is survived by his sons, Graeme and Robert, and his daughter Jan (Mrs Larsen). His son John was a surgeon in Auckland and is survived by a doctor daughter.
